Norma Kamali Spreads the Love

Norma Kamali arrived at Soho’s Apple Store yesterday morning clad in one of her signature black jumpsuits over a graphic print tee. Unremarkable, perhaps, save for the fact that she created it herself—on her iPhone. “I did it in a cab on my way to the office,” Kamali explained of the new design application, just one of many innovations discussed at a talk entitled “The Democratization of Fashion.” We’ve heard the phrase bandied about plenty before, but what exactly does it mean to Kamali? Given the new technologies that are now literally at the tips of our fingers, she believes we ought to be spreading the love more than ever. “We need to present ourselves in a new way,” Kamali said, referring to the lucrative retail potential of not only the Internet but Skype-ing and mobile apps. “This little thing,” she said, pointing to her iPhone’s screen, “it’s giving you a platform, an audience.” Kamali-philes can now download the designer’s app free of charge and shop from both her Walmart collection as well as normakamalibay, the just-launched line she created exclusively for eBay. If you’re still not convinced Kamali’s got your best retail interests at heart, consider this: Every item from the new eBay collection will retail for under $300.
